| Flip your machine over... They run right behind the bumper.. You will see them run the semi-circle of the bumper.. Ohh and don't do it if you have stairs.. Cause it will fall.. I have a very flat apartment... |

| You can tape over the sensors and use it in an area with stairs, just use the virtual wall to block the stairs. |

|
|
| I too have struggled with the Roomba cleaning my black area rugs. Our Roomba goes in circles and backwards, leaving a trail of dirt. I could not figure out what in the world was happening. Interestingly, however, I have a black area rug with cream bumble bees and it cleans it very well--but not the rugs that are predominately black. I am so happy to hear that there is a solution--cover the sensors. |

I tried taping over the sensors last night (only saw two sensor areas though...... I'll have to look again). I put white paper over the sensors and roomba seemed to become more erratic and would still only cross about 1/2 of my black carpet designs. I tried thicker white notecards and got the same result.
What kind of "taping over the sensors" is working for people? |

| Frosted scotch tape on all 4 sensors did the trick for me. |

I used masking tape.. And you do have to get all four sensors...

Here is the link to the online manual.. If you go to page two.. It will show you were the sensors are... Hope that helps.... |

| Just remember that once the sensors are taped.. Your Roomba will fall down stairs.. It will not be able to detect the cliff..... |

Yep - missed the two sensors farthest from the front.
It works beautifully now!
Thanks for the help ending frustration on an otherwise wonderful product.
I did contact Irobot tech support before I found this forum. Looking back at the reply, they hinted to blocking the sensors to fix the problem while being very adamant that modifying anything would void the warranty. I guess I should read more between the lines when tech support wants to do the right thing but isn't allowed to by the company. |

I was having the exact same problem and instead of putting tape over the sensors I bought a can of compressed air and blew the dust off of the cliff sensors. Roomba is no longer moving backwards and its now doing a better job at cleaning the rugs. I hope this works for everyone else as it did for me.
There are 4 cliff sensors and inside each hole there are 2 separate sensors. Make sure that all of the dust is removed. |
