So, is a firmware update coming out anytime soon? :o I hope that serial port gets some use at least! Here are some things I would like to see which might be possible with software updates:

1. Improved handling on medium pile carpet. On certain kinds of medium pile carpet Roomba's thinks it’s wedged under an object and starts backing up. Possibly because its wheel motors are drawing lots of current or maybe the wheels are slipping because it can't get good traction. Either way, I think this could be adjusted and the threshold could be set higher so it would not happen. Maybe set it in "high carpet" mode by holding down two buttons.

2. A way to disable the cliff sensors. On very dark carpet the Roomba will think its encountering a cliff and start backing up (different reason from the above problem). It would be nice if the cliff sensors could be turned on and off so tape would not have to be used. Something like when you turn it on if you hold down the power button for 5 seconds it disables the cliff sensors temporarily.

Those are the two main things I can think of which a firmware update could fix.
