I've only had my Discovery SE model (Smeagol) for just shy of a month now but my wife (who thought I was crazy buying it...) and I love it. (I know its still too early for a final judgment...)
My wife was one of those "vacuums once a day" types (we have a Corgi who sheds non-stop...).
After reading all the posts here and else-where, I figured it was a gamble. So I purchased it from Hammerker-Schlammerker (My name for the place cause I can never remember the name correctly...) with the plan that if it failed...I could get my money back and just buy a new TV for the bedroom.
But so far...I have no complaints at all. It does the whole downstairs on one charge (4 big rooms...three carpeted...) and 98% of the time it finds its charging-base when done.
We Smeagol-proof all the rooms before launching it. We have a bunch of area rugs that sometime trip it up but it always finds its way off of them and out of tight spots. The Corgi (Stryder) used to bark at it and follow it from room to room but now he just ignores it. (I wish I could stop following it...).
It did take a tumble down the stairs once. No one was there to witness it and my CSI investigation of the tread pattern thinks it "backed off" the stairs after hitting the railing...
I do religiously clean it after every cycle (the whole nine yards...remove and clean the brushes...filter....sensors...dustbin...crevices...with canned air and such...).
We have had two scares with it (other than the roll down the stairs...). One turned out to just be a drained battery (wife calls me at work all bummed with "Smeagol died and I cannot get it to turn on anymore..." . I came home and put him on his charger and all was well. The second time he just stopped in the middle of cleaning (no beep...nothing....no charging...etc) I had to take the battery out and put it back in but he has been fine since.
He does a great job covering the whole house (based on track marks...) and really picks up a ton of dog hair every time.
We shall see if he makes it past the infamous 5 month mark a lot of people talk about....
PS - The only issue now is that my wife loves it too much for me to not get it replaced if it dies on us.... (oops!)
Cheers,
