Probably will make it wear out quicker if anything, but it might keep it a bit cleaner to wash it with water.
Personally I just blow them out with compressed air. The only purpose of the filter is to filter out fine dust particles, so as long as it is still doing that to your satisfaction then it is doing it's job.
