i think it works very, very well on hardwook floors as far as getting pet hair up.

in fact, i'll bet that once you see how much pet hair the roomba collects in the dirt bin after each use, you will say "oh my, i can't believe there was ssssoooo much hair on the floor."

Roomba performs best on smooth, hard surfaces; and should give long service; but, there is one thing about its design that you should be aware of before buying. Roomba's front wheel is hard, blackened plastic and is in a non-swiveling mount.

In other words, the front wheel does not steer Roomba, nor is it at all steerable. When Roomba travels straight ahead, or in reverse, the wheel rotates nicely about its axle due to force of friction with the floor; however, whenever Roomba changes direction (its drive-wheels make that happen) the front-wheel is subjected to a mixture of rotating and lateral forces applied to its periphery. Owners have reported that the lateral scrubbing of that wheel on the floor has marred or marked the floor.

Owners who have used Roombas on unfinished hardwood, or concrete slabs have reported damaged font wheels. iRobot does not provide replacement wheels, and if they did, the work of replacing the wheel would be too difficult for the typical owner to accomplish on the Disco models.

gordon is full of crap !

the front wheel of the roomba works fine, travels nicely and does not mark anything while doing so.

think about it...millions of roomba units are out there...if the front wheel did half of what gordo claims, you would be hearing about it.

get the roomba, get the hair up and be happy.

forchristsakes its not like the roomba cost a million bucks.

Yes you can say that more than 1,000,000 have been sold, but there has been no news claiming more than 2M have been sold. Point being it is not "millions". One must also ask: How many of those sold are still being used? And one might also ask: Does the number sold also include those units produced to replace the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Roombas which quickly went sour? There is no way of knowing answers to those questions, but I have little doubt that the majority of units are in landfills and closets.

Similarly we can't know the number of instances of floor marring due to that front-wheel design, because only a very small fraction of users are actually reporting on these boards (the silent-majority syndrome).

On that, you are super-right superdud. I didn't say 'don't buy it', I was merely pointing out what has been reported, so the person would not be disappointed if floor marking occurred.

Quote: iRobot does not provide replacement wheels ....so says mister gordon.

this may be true BUT...irobot will replace the entire roomba if the front wheel on your unit continues to mark a floor.

why ?

because the front wheel works fine for about 99.99999% of users. the other .00001% are folks who would find fault with the second coming of christ. rather than argue with this small band of boring people, irobot just sends out a new unit.

i see several post here as to where to purchase a roomba to insure lifetime replacement of same. worry not, irobot is in the game for a long time to come. the fact is that the roomba is being constantly developed, improved and updated by the brightest minds around at MIT.

nobody but nobody should keep any roomba that is not working to their complete satisfaction. simply pick up the phone, call irobot toll free, obtain a RMA number, send in the brush guard and wait for a uniformed agent of UPS to hand you a new unit - still guaranteed by irobot - at your very own door step.

roomba away america and around the world, irobot is one customer friendly company who will bend over backwards to place a roomba working to your satisfaction on your floor.[/b]

8) works just fine on hardwood floors and dog har. Picks up my siberian husky's fur really well. I use it at least 2x a day since she sheds so bad. Unless you want to continue to pull out your reg vacuum all the time. I highly recommend the discovery. I haven't had any problem with it marring my floors.

I think the Roomba is a God Send! I love it. It picks up so much hair from my Great Dane it almost gags me to look in the bin. I always empty it after about the first 1/2 hr, to keep it running better. I don't know how I used to sweep the floors so often. I've been using it everyday- or more on the weekends, for 6 months. I would suggest really cleaning it well every so often. I'll buy another one when I wear this one out! -- I'm a happy user! :P

I have to concur... I don't get any marks on tile or hardwood floors, and I'm continually surprised at how much dirt is in the collection bin, even when I think the floors are already pretty clean.
