Had my iRobot Roomba (no docking port, a cheaper model) since Dec 07 and loved it until today.

After a minute or so, it goes backwards and turns when it hasn't hit anything, kind of like it's lost its programming?
Never goes in a straight line anymore, just aimlessly turning and backing up and getting caught on things backwards, leading to the beeps.

When I restart it in the middle of the room, same thing happens.
Any advice?

Thanks.

barb, Welcome to RoombaReview!!

It seems your Roomba's bumper sensor(s) might be at fault. Gently tap each side of the bumper a few times and start your Roomba. It wouldn't hurt to take out the battery and press the Power button for 10 seconds. Replace battery and run it.

If this doesn't help, respond with the model # of your Roomba.

Hi, thanks for your quick reply.

Did as you instructed.

No change to its operation.

Can't find the model number anywhere on the housing anywhere.

Says Patent Nos. , other patents pending,
and 2007 iRobot Corporation as well as Customer Support (but I thought I'd try the internet first).

Barb, take out the battery and look for a sticker. Give us the first 5 numbers.. It should be like JUNxxxxxxxxxxxx

Give us 5 numbers after the letters. I'm taking that this Roomba is still under warranty. If so then I would call iRobot to have then exchange it. You can run the built-in diagnostics but if it's under warranty, iRobot will replace the defective part(s).

Let us know.

The number isn't on the sticker (which has Recycle and Caution info).

This is the number etched into the battery housing:
070921 20163.

Hopefully that's what you require.
Have no idea where my warranty/receipt is...was a Xmas gift.
Barb

PS--diagnostics? oh oh (way over my head, ha ha).
Thanks again.

It looks to me like the robot was manufactued in Sept. 07.
You can still register the roomba without the receipt. Go to the irobot website and hit register robot. Just list date received and gift. They will want the number under the battery and probably the number off the charger. Then you can email the problem or call and explain it. If it was new (not refurb.) you will still be under warranty.
Good Luck!

Yes, it was new as a gift.

I'm so grateful to you folks.
Thanks for the very quick info and help.

Much appreciated.

Just an update:

The iRobot representative was wonderful and solved my problem right away. Everyone should use compressed air to blow out the cliff sensors, and basically everything underneath!

You should've seen the dust that came out with a compressor nozzle!
(Yep, I'm embarrassed...)

There is no way anyone can clean their Roomba thoroughly WITHOUT using an air nozzle on a compressor.

Worked like a charm. thanks, forum, and thanks iRobot for helping me make my Roomba good as new. Great little machine. Even the dog has stopped playing with it!

Absolutely thrilled you got her running again! Yes, dust does build up in the workings and a blowout of the sensors seems to be the best fix most of the time for weird running issues that pop up.
Good luck!

FYI we have a WIKI section here with all sorts of information about cleaning and maintenance. Why not start here:
