I'm doing a project with the roomba irobot and rfIDs. So we want to have the roomba be able to read passive rfIDs from a range of somewhere between 3 and 9 meters. The rfIDs will be used to both help the roomba navigate, and eventually to take an inventory. I've already got the roomba and started looking into rfID stuff, but it got a little overwhelming. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to start?

Here is a vendor that specializes in long-range RFID stuff. He has a number of infomative articles on his web site.
