I am currently using the iRobot platform to make a system where the iRobot can detect and locate the position of a beacon. Currently I am considering sonar as others have done this using so with other types of robots. As of now I am considering the use of passive sonar using 2 receivers and one transmitting beacon. Does anyone have suggestions on developing/programming the system? Criticisms, etc. would be helpful and much appreciated.

If you want to use two sonar receiver in order to locate a sonar beacon, you should apply some kind of stereo "vision". The emitting sonar should pulse at a quite low frequency and then by the time difference at pulse detection on each of the receiver you should be able to locate the beacon direction. If you also want to know the beacon distance, you should use a mix of sonar and infrared. By pulsing sonar and infrared at the same time the time difference between the two pulse source at the reception should give you an aproximate distance.

Muzzy, have you selected the Sonar Hardware yet ? If not you might want to take a look at the "Max Sonar" . A couple of RoombaReview hackers have used them with some success.

The "Max Sonar" is an active sonar has it pulse and receive ultrasound, so it's only to be used for ranging.

Would it be better to use a passive sonar system, where the beacon transmits the signal to the receivers, or to use an active sonar system, where the transducers emit the signal and wait for an echo. Just to reiterate, I want the iRobot to locate the beacon. Also, what is the range for this sonar system?

Also, what would the circuit set up be for the sonar system. How is the transmitter and receiver circuit different?
